MESA, Ariz. – A 43-year-old Mesa woman faces several charges in the Aug. 2 death of a motor scooter rider.

Julie Ann Gutierrez was arrested Monday on suspicion of manslaughter, possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and prescription drugs.

Gutierrez was driving her vehicle at a high rate of speed when she failed to stop at a red light near Broadway and Ellsworth roads in east Mesa, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Her vehicle hit a motor scooter rider who was stopped at the light. John Wutt, 52, was ejected from the scooter. His leg was amputated in the accident and he sustained a fatal head fracture.

Wutt was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gutierrez was hospitalized for treatment of several broken bones.

Investigators found a variety of drugs in Gutierrez's vehicle and are awaiting lab results of her blood. Charges may escalate to second-degree murder depending on the outcome of the blood tests, according to the sheriff's office.
