GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Goodyear police have arrested a woman who allegedly tried to drown her 20-month-old daughter.

Police responded to a possible child drowning at an apartment near Indian School Road and the Loop 303 Monday afternoon, according to spokeswoman Lisa Kutis.

The girl was transported to Phoenix Children's Hospital where she remains in extremely critical condition.

Goodyear detectives investigated and arrested the toddler's mother, Phoeteama Janiece Neal, 28, on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder.

Detectives said earlier in the day, Neal learned that the child would be relinquished to the custody of the father at the end of this month.

Neal is being held on $1 million bond.
