MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities say a gang member is in custody for allegedly hitting a man on the head with a beer bottle while yelling racial slurs at a Mesa bar.
It happened at the Denim and Diamonds bar on Main Steet, east of Power Rd.
Bond was set at $10,000 for 28-year-old Joseph David Burgoyne at his initial court appearance Monday.
He was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of aggravated assault and gang crimes.
Mesa police say Burgoyne is a documented member of the Crazy White Boys -- a criminal street gang with white supremacist ideologies.
Burgoyne has CWB (Crazy White Boys) tattooed on his chin.
Authorities say Burgoyne is accused of yelling racial slurs at a black man at a bar in Mesa before assaulting the victim with a beer bottle.
Witnesses say Burgoyne continued to yell racial slurs until he left the property.
Police say the incident is being investigated as a hate crime.
Burgoyne doesn't have a lawyer yet.
