PHOENIX -- Perhaps best known for his role as Mike Seaver on "Growing Pains," actor Kirk Cameron has a new movie on DVD, and it's a story that is very close to his heart.

It's called "Mercy Rule," and the tagline is, "There's no quit in family."

Cameron checked in with 3TV's Kaley O'Kelley via satellite to talk about the project and why is means so much to him and his co-star, who is also his wife.

"My wife and I are always on the lookout for a great movie that we can sit down with our kids and watch on movie night," he explained. "We want something that's going to be fun and exciting, and something that will build up the values in our kids that we want them to have. … We decided that instead of waiting for a movie like that, we should just make one."

The movie's website describes "Mercy Rule" as "a film for every family that embraces the values of mercy, patience, sacrifice and trusting God."

"It's really more than a movie," Cameron said. "My passion is rebuilding and strengthening families. I think that if we rally together as families and we trust God, we can find the strength we need to succeed."

He also talked a bit about why God and religion are becoming more mainstream topics in Hollywood.

"I think people are just understanding that the stories that thrill us, the stories that really inspire us to live the life we want to have as families are stories about redemption, stories about mercy and sacrifice and patience. These are the kinds of movies that we go see.

"These films resonate with the human heart," he continued. "These are the kinds of films I love to make."

"Mercy Rule" is available now at Wal-Mart.
