SURPRISE, Ariz. -- A man who police say fled to Mexico following a 2004 shooting in Surprise was arrested Wednesday morning.

Juan Carlos Mendoza was apprehended for a grand jury warrant that had been issued for attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault with a firearm, according to the Surprise Police Department.

Mendoza was located at a residence just blocks from where the shooting occurred and members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force took him into custody without incident.

Police said Mendoza shot the victim several times during an altercation on Dec. 27, 2004, in the area of Bell and El Mirage roads. He fled to Mexico a short time later.

Sgt. Mike Donovan said Mendoza re-entered the United States using an alias in March.
