PHOENIX (AP) -- The Phoenix Police Department is planning to hire 300 more officers by the end of 2017.

Police Chief Daniel Garcia, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and City Manager Ed Zuercher announced the hirings at a news conference Monday.

Garcia says the department will hire 100 new officers each year for the next three years starting in 2015.

Officials say the increased staffing levels will put more police on the streets and help ensure officer safety and a continuance of police services.

Phoenix has about 550 fewer police officers than it did in 2009, when the department held its last training academy.

Officials say expediting the hiring of more police officers was made possible by the passage of the city's budget in June.
