It’s no secret that a college student’s favorite part about going back to school is participating in more spirited school events than he or she can keep track of (I already can’t remember everything going on during the first week, even with a planner!) And wearing school colors is typically how collegiates proudly show some love to their mascot, but some trendier students don’t always want to wear those free T-shirts handed out during welcome week-which means everyone wears them. Who would want to blend in?
Now that I’m going into my third year at ASU, I want to show style conscious collegiates, alumni, and parents how to incorporate our favorite Sun Devil, Sparky’s favorite colors, maroon and gold, into casual outfits for class, parent’s weekend, an alumni event or even a G.N.O. (girl’s night out!)
The key to achieving an A+ with these looks is taking basics that you probably already own (or I hope you do! If not, run to your local mall-fast!), highlighting one school color, and accessorizing with a more subtle color-such as silver or gold.
Time to hit the books:
For the first look, I kept it simple on top with a white lace and fringe kimono (TJMaxx), which is extremely popular right now, with a netural cami and maroon shorts (Hollister). To finish off the laid back look, I paired it with a bold, gold statement necklace (Charming Charlie) and black leather sandals with a gold chain detail. Gold, leather, lace-what’s not to love?
Another comfortable option would be a pair of black and white chevron shorts with a solid maroon top (Both from Ross). These shorts have a looser fit and would be great for a busy day running around campus! And of course the look wouldn’t be finished without some serious bling. All you have to do to complete this effortless style is slip on some comfortable flats and you’re ready to go ace that exam.
And once again, the kimono (TJMAXX) takes the spotlight for this outfit. With a rich maroon color, circular fringe detailing and easy fit, it’s perfect to throw on over a simple fitted top, like this black tank. Pull out a pair of your favorite black skinnies and you’ll look oh so chic. Grab a gold necklace (Charming Charlie) and put on some black and gold leather studded sandals (Charlotte Russe), and you’ll be able to transition from class to a lunch date with your friends!
Let’s dress up!
After cramming for all those exams during the week, the best part is to come-celebrating and looking glamorous!
One of the biggest trends carrying into fall is the easy to wear skater dress. This floral maroon one from Macy’s is perfect for a dinner with some nude and gold heels purchased from Charlotte Russe. It’s such a statement itself, that simple earrings make the outfit a stunner!
It’s time to go mod! Like the previous dress, this simple white dress from TJMAXX has a sheer panel at the top and the bottom, making it a fun, trendy item you can always customize for all of your festivities this year. Put on a pair of patent leather maroon pumps (Charlotte Russe) a chunky, gold necklace (Forever 21) and you’ll stand out in an outfit that is trendy, while bringing in a sense of the 60s.
Queue the drumroll from the marching band, our last look is country girl meets city chic. This lovely crème all over lace shift dress (H&M) is a staple item every lady should have in her closet. It’s a great transitional piece and is always guaranteed to make you look put together. Grab your favorite pair of brown booties and a floral gold necklace, maroon cross body, and you’re ready for a country concert!
If you don’t attend ASU or didn’t go to college but want to highlight specific colors in your wardrobe-don’t fret! Just switch out maroon and gold with your colors of choice and you’ll achieve an equally enviable ensemble!
And fellow Sun Devils, you’re in luck-maroon is everywhere this season, so hit the mall or your favorite boutique and show Sparky some love this school year!
