PHOENIX -- Curb appeal can be one of the most important factors in selling your home. That's why your front door needs to make a good impression.

If your door needs a little TLC, you might be able to refresh it with a little "door do-over."

"You can really make a statement with your front door," says Debbie Hernandez from Home Depot. "I like to go a little darker on the color. Usually a red is good luck. Black is very rich and inviting. Chocolate brown is a good color." Neutrals also work well.

The three main types of door are steel, fiberglass and wood. Steel is the least expensive, and it's what most builders put on.  Fiberglass doesn't hold the heat, so it's more energy-efficient.

Having a great door can pay off financially. A study conducted by Remodeling Magazine says homeowners can recoup about 70 percent of their investment cost by adding a fiberglass door to their home.

The folks at Home Depot have plenty of tips and project ideas to spruce up your front door on the cheap.

By the way, August is "National Curb Appeal  Month" so there's no better time to start.
