6 Essential hydration tips that do not involve drinking water

PHOENIX -- Hydration is key to not only staying healthy but also maintaining energy and feeling like you can get through the day. That's especially true during the heat of the summer.

The excessive heat can make everyone feel tired and grumpy and staying hydrated is key to navigating the worst of the summer heat. Everyone knows they should gulp down at least eight to 10 glasses of water every day, but there is more you can do to keep yourself hydrated and healthy, including adding some surprising foods and drinks to your diet.

Rosanna Thill, nutrition director of Hi-Health, rounded up her top six hydration helpers. She shared them with 3TV's April Warnecke Monday morning.

1. Drink skim milk - Believe it or not, skim milk is actually a better hydrator than Gatorade. Its sodium content is in the optimal range and its balance of protein, carbs, sodium and antioxidants is the perfect fuel for your cells.

2. Eat chia seeds - These little seeds are powerhouse super foods that soak up 10 times their size in water to form a gel. It's delicious with granola and fruit and a refreshing and tasty way to boost your hydration.

3. Eat watermelon - There's a reason watermelon is a summertime favorite. It's 90 percent water! Learn some new recipes and try grilled watermelon or watermelon, mint and feta salad to add more watermelon to your diet. Nothing beats a bowl of good old-fashioned fresh watermelon.

4. Popsicles - Let the kiddos have another frosty treat. Popsicles are packed with fluid to hydrate those cells. New varieties of popsicles are made with pure fruit and even vegetables so it's easy to avoid the sugar bombs.

5. Rice - Yes, your read that right. Your Chinese take-out staple is actually a good source of hydration. Choose brown over white and enjoy the benefits of additional water absorption thanks to the preparation of rice where each grain acts as a little tiny sponge soaking up water as it cooks.

6. Have a bowl of soup - OK, so the last thing you want right now is a piping hot bowl of chicken noodle soup. There are dozens of delicious, easy and water-rich cold soups you can make using fresh fruits and vegetables. Cold soups will keep you hydrated and help boost your fruit and veggie intake without making you feel like a bunny rabbit.
