PHOENIX -- Police say an argument at a Cave Creek area home led to a stabbing and then a fatal shooting.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos says officers responded to a shooting Friday around 7:30 p.m. and found a 27-year-old man with a gunshot wound and a 53-year-old man who had been stabbed.

The 27-year-old was pronounced dead. The older victim is in serious but stable condition at an area hospital. He is expected to survive.

A 29-year-old woman who was also at the home told investigators she and the deceased victim went to the house near Cave Creek and Lone Mountain roads and an argument led to the 27-year-old allegedly stabbing the 53-year-old. A 20-year-old man who lives in the home then shot the stabbing suspect, telling police he acted in defense of the other man.

Neighbors told 3TV they heard a loud dispute followed by a gunshot, an unusual occurrence in the normally quiet neighborhood filled with families.

"All of a sudden, I heard this lady screaming really loud and then there was a quick silence and then a bang of a gunshot," Christopher Worley said. "I heard some guy screaming afterwards, so I high-tailed it in my house after that and grabbed my son."

"There was a couple arguing rather loudly, shouting back and forth, that sort of thing," Jim Anderson said. "And then I went inside. My grandson came rushing in and said there was a shot fired, so we called 911."

According to Martos, the 20-year-old man and 29-year-old woman were interviewed and released pending further investigation.
