Peoria man found dead along trail in Yavapai County

PEORIA, Ariz. –- A Peoria man's body has been found along a forest trail south of Flagstaff and his death is being called suspicious.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, hikers discovered the body of George Wesley Montgomery in Beaver Creek along Bell Trail in Wet Beaver Creek Canyon around 11 a.m. Thursday.

The canyon is located 43 miles south of Flagstaff.

Sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said Montgomery, 43, had been shot and a gun was found near his body.

D'Evelyn said the manner of death has not been determined as detectives continue to investigate the circumstances.

Montgomery last had contact with relatives by phone around 7 p.m. Wednesday. At that time, there was an indication he was hiking along the Bell Trail.

Montgomery was black, 6 feet 2 inches tall and wearing shorts and a yellow shirt. His 2002 white GMC Envoy was located in a turnout area near the trail.
