European holiday markets -- If you want to take a big trip over the holidays this year, consider visiting a European holiday market. The tradition began around 1400 in the German-speaking locales of Europe. Markets were established to offer food and provisions for the long, cold winter season. They quickly grew into a beloved holiday tradition.
Today, hundreds of markets attract millions of visitors a year. Most central European towns and villages host a holiday market, and since many are located on a river or other waterway, the best and most relaxing way to experience them is on a river cruise.
