PHOENIX – Two suspects who holed up inside a South Phoenix home after shooting at a police officer surrendered peacefully Friday morning.
According to police, it started when an officer who was on his way home from work at about 2:30 a.m. spotted the suspects committing vandalism – spray painting graffiti -- in the area of 19th Avenue and Interstate 17.
That off-duty officer, who was in his personal vehicle, called for backup and started following the pair.
The situation escalated when one of the suspects fired several shots at the officer in the area of Ninth Avenue and Mohave Street, which is just north of I-17. The officer was not hurt.
After firing at the officer, the suspects led police on a short chase to a home in the neighborhood of 13th and Southern avenues. The home belongs to a family member of one of the suspects. Several people were inside.
Police said the suspects surrendered without further incident at about 5:30 a.m. Investigators said once that happened, everybody was cooperative.
No injuries were reported.
Investigators have not released any information about the suspects.
