NOGALES, Ariz. – Customs and Border Protection officers apprehended two people in separate incidents this week for attempting to smuggle methamphetamine and heroin with a combined value estimated at $235,000.

Officers at the DeConcini crossing selected a 34-year-old Mexican national for further questioning as he attempted to enter the United States in a Honda sedan Tuesday.

After a CBP narcotics detection canine alerted to the presence of drugs, officers found nearly $50,000 worth of methamphetamine in the vehicle’s spare tire.

Officers at the same crossing on Monday selected a 23-year old Mexican national for further questioning as he attempted to enter the United States in a Chevrolet sedan.

A drug detection canine then alerted officers to 13 pounds of heroin concealed within the vehicle’s frame. The heroin was valued at nearly $185,000.

Both men were referred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. Their vehicles and drugs were seized.
