PHOENIX -- The hottest temperatures of the year are in the forecast for this week.

In the Valley we are expecting highs in the range of 112-116 degrees, and it’s likely the National Weather Service will issue excessive heat warnings as we approach near-record temperatures.

Strong high pressure will build across the desert Southwest, resulting in drier conditions and a steady warming trend.

The hottest temperatures of the summer are expected Wednesday and Thursday, with readings in the lower deserts likely falling into a 110-115 degree range.

Thunderstorms will generally remain relegated to the higher terrain of eastern Arizona through at least Wednesday.

An increase in moisture will bring higher rain chances to the area late in the week and into the weekend.
