Man shot, killed outside his Phoenix apartment; suspect on the loosePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX – Police are trying to determine if drugs were involved in the shooting death of a man outside his Phoenix apartment.
It happened at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of 17th Avenue and Grant Street. Investigators were still on the scene Thursday morning.
Details are still scarce as investigators work to piece together what happened.
According to officers on the scene, the victim, who has not been identified, was walking outside his apartment when somebody gunned him down.
The 29-year-old man was hit multiple times.
When officers arrived on the scene, a group of people was trying to load the victim into a car to take him to the hospital. Paramedics took over as soon as they got there, but they were unable to save the man.
Video from the scene showed several evidence markers on the ground. Officers were paying particular attention to a white car parked outside the victim's apartment.
Police say the gunman ran away immediately after opening fire. Witnesses told police he went south on 17th Avenue and then east on Sherman Street.
According to Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department , the suspect is described only as a heavyset black male. Police do not have any other information about him.
Police are not sure if the victim and the suspect were acquainted.
"Investigators are looking into drugs as a possible motive for the shooting," Crump wrote in an email to media outlets.
While police have not released any information about the victim, a friend of his family talked to 3TV's Jill Galus.
"Everyone who knew him liked him," Priscilla Navarette said. "There's no reason for this, no excuses for it. I don't care what they find or what they figure out or whatever. There's no excuse -- not for taking his life."
