Phoenix police: 2 found shot inside carPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are searching for the person who opened fire on a car, critically wounding two of the three people inside early Wednesday morning.
It happened shortly before 3 a.m. near 16th Street and Roeser Road. Police said the shots came from somebody in another vehicle, but no description of that vehicle was immediately available.
Although the man behind the wheel the bullet-riddled car was badly wounded, he drove for about half a mile before coming to a stop at 16th Street and Southern Avenue.
A woman who was in the back seat was shot, as well. A woman in the front passenger seat was not injured.
Police describe the victims' wounds as life-threatening. Both reportedly are in critical condition.
Officers found numerous bullet casings scattered on the ground where the shooting occurred. They said more than 20 rounds hit the car.
Investigators are talking to the uninjured woman. She is the only known witness to the shooting, but police said she was not cooperating at first. That has since changed.
"Sometimes when people are involved in traumatic events, their first thoughts may be the grief of their friends being injured, the stress of it," Lt. Chris Moore of the Phoenix Police Department said. "It appears that she may not have known a lot about what was happening. I think officers are trying to get as much information as possible."
Detectives will look at surveillance video from nearby businesses to see if there is anything that might help them piece together what happened.
