LAKE PLEASANT, Ariz. -- A dog was recovered from Lake Pleasant on Saturday after the car he was tied to rolled into the water, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

The dog was tied to a back tire but somehow got inside the car and released the emergency brake around 10:15 p.m. Friday, the sheriff's office said.

Authorities had to wait for daylight to search the lake. Divers located the car a few feet offshore in about 15 feet of water and found the dog in the passenger seat. A tow truck pulled the car out.

"I thought it was just a car," said witness Deon Davis. "Insurance, nobody's hurt, it's fine. But when I find out it was a pet, that's a little bit more serious. Pets are like family members."

MCSO said the dog's owners have been cooperating and helped pinpoint the location of the car.
