PHOENIX – The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has found the body of a Glendale man who went missing while tubing.

Fitzroy Campbell, 42, was last seen tubing down the Lower Salt River around 2:15 p.m. Thursday.

According to MCSO, Campbell was tubing with his wife and some friends when they got separated and he never turned up at their meeting point.

"They came to a fork in the river, and he went one way and the other three went a different direction," said sheriff's office spokesman Officer Chris Hegstrom. "They came into some rapids, they were pushed down the river a little faster than he was, and they lost connection with him."

Sheriff's deputies searched by boat and along the river's edge, The search involved the Mounted Posse, Search and Rescue Posse, along with the dive team and air support.

Campbell's body was located Friday afternoon in 8 to 12 feet of water downstream from where he was last seen. His tube was not in sight.

It is unknown if Campbell got a cramp, suffered a medical condition, or had some other problem. Deputies do not suspect foul play and say alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

His family described him as a good swimmer, but tubers say it's easy to underestimate the water.

"I think what happens is some folks get in the water, and they don't understand the undertow and the rapids out here," said Lori Fleming, who has been tubing the Salt River since the 1980s. "It can actually take you under."

Deputies say they may never know exactly what happened, but the county medical examiner will determine the cause death.

This is the second death at the Salt River this year.

"Of course you're wanting to look out for the safety of others when you're here as well as have a good time," Fleming said.
