MESA, Ariz. -- Maricopa County sheriff's deputies arrested a Mesa man on animal cruelty charges in the death of his dog.

Deputies said Brian Womack, 40, failed to provide adequate shelter and water for his 1-year-old male pit bull named Bishop.

Deputies said they found the dead dog chained up in Womack's yard where there was no shade or water in temperatures near 110 degrees.

Womack insisted that his dog died because a neighbor poisoned it, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies took the animal to a veterinarian for an examination and the cause of death was determined to be extreme heat exhaustion.

Womack was arrested and booked into jail on Wednesday.
