PHOENIX -- A 9-year-old boy died Thursday morning after being hit by a car in south Phoenix Wednesday night.

Richard Vejar Jr. was riding his bike near 26th Avenue and Roeser Road when he went through a stop sign and was clipped by an SUV, according to police.

According to Richard's aunt, he had jumped on his bike to get his little brother an ice cream cone when he was hit.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash. Police say it appears the driver, a 37-year-old woman, did not have time to react.

She stayed at the scene and talked to investigators.

The neighborhood is adjacent to a field and canal, so the street was not well-lit.

The boy was transported to Phoenix Children's Hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.
