Man accused of stealing Payson police vehiclePosted: Updated:
PAYSON, Ariz. -- A Payson man was arrested in the Valley while driving a vehicle that was stolen from the Payson Police Department on Sunday night, according to Don Engler with the City of Payson.
The vehicle was stolen from the area of East Frontier Street and South St. Phillips Street, where it had been parked.
The Payson Police Department began an investigation and determined that the suspect in the incident was a local man.
After further investigation, information was provided to the Phoenix area law enforcement agencies, because it was believed the suspect was possibly driving to that area from information gathered in the initial investigation.
Also during that time, an off-duty Glendale police officer observed the vehicle operating in a suspicious manner and notified law enforcement in the Phoenix area.
The Peoria Police Department, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, and other Phoenix area law enforcement agencies located the vehicle in the area of 78th Avenue and Grand Avenue, where they attempted to stop the police vehicle.
Initially, the man driving the police vehicle fled from the officers, but was eventually stopped, utilizing stop sticks. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene.
He was identified as 20-year-old Valentine Mazon LaBorin, of Payson.
Police said LaBorin is the man who stole the vehicle in Payson.
No police equipment was missing from the vehicle.
The only damage to the vehicle was to the tires from the spiking.
