PHOENIX -- Police officers from across Phoenix responded to help a fellow officer who called for urgent assistance as he fought with a suspect next to state Route 51 Wednesday morning.
Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the officer was fighting with a man who'd been taken into custody for allegedly trespassing at a Wal-Mart store.
Thompson said the officer exited SR51 when the man went down to the floorboards in the back of the patrol car.

The officer didn't know if the suspect was having a medical emergency. The man had said he'd taken methamphetamine earlier in the day, according to Thompson.

The officer pulled over and opened the door to check on the suspect. Thompson said that's when the man "bolted" out of the car and the struggle began.

"We have one witness who said that the individual actually tried to grab the officer's gun," Thompson said. "That's how serious of a struggle it was."

The officer called for backup and the man was taken into custody. He was transported to a hospital for observation.
