2 Fires within 30 minutes at Chandler apartment complexPosted: Updated:
CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Investigators are trying to determine if a pair of fires at a Chandler apartment complex Tuesday morning are connected.
While police are not releasing any information, at least one resident believes the situation is suspicious.
The first fire started at about 3 a.m. in a car parked under a carport at an apartment complex in the area of Elliot and Price roads.
A witness told 3TV's Jill Galus the car's owner was watching the fire and did not appear to be concerned.
"This girl's car was melting. She wasn't even freaking out about it," Fallon O'Sullivan said.
About 30 minutes later, a second fire was reported in one of the units at the complex. O'Sullivan said the woman who owns the burned-out car lives there.
O'Sullivan said she saw the smoke and initially thought it was coming from a small fire pit, but decided to check it out from a better vantage point.
"I see the whole side of the apartment on fire," she said.
O'Sullivan said she started banging on her neighbors' doors to alert them.
Galus reported that officers have been in an out of the burned apartment all morning and have taped off the portion of the carport where the car caught fire.
At this point, investigators have not determined how either of the fires started.
Although police have not released any information, O'Sullivan says something just is not right.
"Honestly, it's not a coincidence to me," O'Sullivan said. "I would understand maybe your car on fire or your apartment, but not both of them in the same night. And then they're not there in their apartment when it's on fire? It's not a coincidence to me."
No injuries were reported.
