PHOENIX -- Police say a 24-year-old man was fatally shot during a road rage incident in west Phoenix early Sunday morning.

According to Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson, 19-year-old Antonio Torres-Pena and a friend were leaving a party near 75th Avenue and Thomas Road around 1:30 a.m. when they got stuck behind a stopped vehicle.

Police said Torres-Pena honked his horn at the stopped car and was then confronted by the passenger of that car, Luis Gaona.

The two reportedly got into a fight, along with the driver of Gaona's car and the passenger in Torres-Pena's car.

At some point, Torres-Pena allegedly shot Gaona twice in the abdomen.

Torres-Pena reportedly fled the scene with his passenger but was taken into custody after his car broke down nearby.

Gaona was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries but was expected to survive. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.

Torres-Pena was booked into Maricopa County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder.

An attorney representing Torres-Pena during his initial appearance before a judge said his client was in fear for his life.

The Judge set his bail at $400,000.
