LAVEEN, Ariz. -- A man was killed after crashing his motorcycle into a pole in the Laveen area Saturday morning, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Hernan Herrera, 23, was reportedly traveling west on Southern Avenue near 47th Avenue sometime between 4 and 5:45 a.m.

Sheriff's spokesman Officer Chris Hegstrom said Herrera was traveling at a high speed, and his 2013 Yamaha motorcycle began to wobble and cross the center line. He collided with a wooden sign post, which was shaped like a cross.

According to Hegstrom, Herrera was thrown from the bike and found a few hundred feet away.

Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.
