PHOENIX --- Attorney and blogger Bob Lord says he has never met Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal, but he was still able to expose him as the person making controversial comments on his blog.

Lord, who writes for the progressive "Blog for Arizona," says for years, he has been sparring online with a person using the alias "Thucydides."

Over time, he developed a hunch that Huppenthal was the person behind that alias.

"This commenter knew the details of John Huppenthal's childhood, and Huppenthal is 60 years old," he said.

Lord began looking into the IP addresses connected to the comments.

"We found some coming from the Department of Education. One of the giveaways was that we had a comment from Japan, from a time when John Huppenthal was in Japan," Lord explained.

In early June, Lord confronted Huppenthal online.

"In the comment thread, I asked if he was Huppenthal.  I didn't get a response to that."

Eventually, Huppenthal confessed to posting the comments, which included calling families on welfare, "lazy pigs," and calling for a ban on Spanish media in Arizona.
