MESA, Ariz. – A woman was found dead in far east Mesa Thursday morning and authorities say it appears to be a case of domestic violence.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting in the desert area north of Power and Thomas roads at about 6:30 a.m.

A red sedan and a small pickup truck were parked on the side of the road.

The woman's boyfriend, 21-year-old Matthew Borja, was immediately taken into custody. He was later booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on numerous charges including first-degree murder, aggravated assault and unlawful imprisonment.

Sheriff's spokesman Officer Chris Hegstrom said Borja confronted his 19-year-old girlfriend, Sabrina Vega, about an "affiliation" and then fired several shots at her because he was not satisfied with her answer.

Northbound Power Road was closed for much of the day.
