TEMPE, Ariz. – Tempe police are conducting an investigation after two pedestrians were hit by a car near Arizona State University Wednesday morning.

Lt. Mike Pooley said the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Veterans Way near Rural Road when the pedestrians attempted to cross the street in a crosswalk in front of Wells Fargo Arena. One of them was on a skateboard at the time.

Both pedestrians were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Pooley said they are expected to be OK.

Pooley said the pedestrians are not ASU students, but police do not know their identities at this time.

The driver remained at the scene.

Pooley said officers are getting conflicting stories about what occurred and they are trying to determine who had the right of way.

Detectives plan to view surveillance video from security cameras in the area to see what exactly happened.

"It's important for drivers to pay extremely careful attention, but at the same time it's a message for our pedestrians that walk in this area that they also need to abide by all traffic laws for this reason," Pooley said.
