Man pleads guilty in Ahwatukee carjacking casePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- A man accused of carjacking an elderly couple near Ahwatukee last year and driving off with the male passenger still in the vehicle has pleaded guilty to assault and kidnapping.
Maricopa County prosecutors say 32-year-old Chateen Latfolla also pleaded guilty Tuesday to two drug offenses and criminal trespassing in other cases.
His sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 1.
Latfolla allegedly carjacked the vehicle Dec. 14 after crashing his pickup truck, which was being pursued by authorities for numerous traffic violations.
Authorities say Latfolla approached an SUV and pulled the 85-year-old female driver out of the vehicle. He drove off without realizing the woman's 91-year-old husband was in the passenger seat.
Latfolla later was arrested at a casino and found to be in possession of a substance believed to be heroin.
