SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- A North Scottsdale couple says their horse was mutilated at their property Wednesday night.

Jana McDowell found her quarter horse, Jerry, in the barn with a slit in his neck around 8:45 p.m.

She and her husband were home at the time and said Jerry was fine when they left him around 7:15 p.m.

The McDowells said they didn't see or hear anything, but a neighbor reported seeing a light-colored SUV drive onto the property.

Jana McDowell said the cut appeared to be made with a surgical scalpel and just missed the jugular vein.

"Somebody would have to be very sick and deranged to do this to an animal," Jana McDowell said.

The McDowells say they have no idea who cut Jerry's throat and why.

"We're still at a loss as to the motive or the reason," Jeff McDowell said. "Obviously, someone has a vendetta of some sort or has interest in harming us."

The McDowells consider it an attempted murder and are offering a $1,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to an arrest.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said deputies went to the home in the community of Rio Verde and took a report.
