PHOENIX -- A north Phoenix home was damaged after it caught fire Saturday afternoon.

A woman told firefighters she was sleeping inside the house near Seventh Street and Peoria Avenue around 3:30 p.m. when she heard a loud explosion. She saw that the back of her house was on fire and quickly got out.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Ruben Saavedra said when firefighters from Engine No. 7 arrived about three minutes after the call, there was heavy fire and smoke coming from the back of the home and attic area.

The flames were quickly extinguished, Saavedra said.

The woman was evaluated as a precaution. No one else was inside the home at the time.

Saavedra said this was the second residential fire battled by the Engine No. 7 crew within two hours.

"The conditioning and training these firefighters do daily pays off on these hot days," he said in an email.
