Mesa apartment fire could be arson

MESA, Ariz. -- A fire at a Mesa apartment building Thursday morning is being investigated as possible arson.

Units from Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert and Queen Creek responded to the fire near Southern Avenue and Country Club Drive at around 10 a.m.

Firefighters found a single-story apartment building with smoke and flames showing, according to Capt. Forrest Smith with the Mesa Fire and Medical Department.

Crews were able to contain the fire to one unit. No one was in the apartment at the time of the fire.

Witnesses said they saw someone leaving the scene with matches in hand.

No one was injured in the fire, which caused approximately $30,000 in damage.
