PHOENIX -- A Valley father and son were burned in a house fire Thursday evening.

Phoenix firefighters responded to the home near 38th Avenue and Bethany Home Road at about 6 p.m.

Most of the fire was at the rear of the home, according to Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Mark Vanacore. Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire.

A neighbor said the family was cooking on the back patio when the fire started.

"It sounded like a jet engine and like a small explosion and that's when we saw the fire on the back porch here," Don Lewis said. "Father got burnt. The son cut his hand open I guess trying to get to his dad."

Both men were taken to Maricopa Medical Center.

The 60-year-old father suffered critical burns all over his body. His 30-year-old son suffered minor burns.
