PHOENIX -- Parents of Phoenix Boys Choir members said goodbye to their kids for three long weeks, as the choir heads off on its tour of some western states. The choir has boys ranging from 10 to 14 years old, and goes on a three week tour every year, sometimes featuring international travel.

3TV's Tess Rafols met with the boys, their parents and choir director Georg Stangelberger before they departed, and gave us a listen in to some of the music they'll be performing.

"It's an exciting time for the boys because it's sort of the culmination of the year," Stangelberger said. "Everything we've prepared for is now coming together."

Kids and parents talked about why they're excited for the tour and the mixed emotions they'll feel being separated from each other for three weeks.

"We will miss him, but it's such a phenomenal experience for our son," says mom Cristina Carlson, who is saying goodbye to her 10-year-old son, Matthew. "Besides performing in some great venues, he will developing confidence and independence."

The kids will be living with host families during the tour and will get full days to explore the areas they visit.

"We get to go see all the really cool sights, and we get to walk around and spend a whole day with the host families," says one choir member, Nicholas."So we really have a lot of fun."

It's a long trip. But the boys are prepared and well-rehearsed. "We've practiced tons. Tons of different music; lots of interesting music," says another young member, Matthew.

This year, the tour is going to Utah, Idaho and Oregon. In Oregon, the boys will be participating in the Pacific International Children's Choir Festival.
