Suspect in deadly shooting at Glendale apartment complex in custodyPosted: Updated:
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Police say the man responsible for a deadly early morning shooting at a Glendale apartment complex is in custody.
The shooting occurred at about 2 a.m. at the Glendale Shadows Apartments in the neighborhood north of 59th and Northern avenues.
A resident of the complex who witnessed the incident told 3TV's Jill Galus it started with a fight in a community laundry room. According to the witness, one man had another pinned on the ground. The man on the ground broke free, pulled a gun and fired five times, the witness said.
Police confirmed those details.
The witness also told Galus there were several people in the area at the time of the fight and subsequent shoot. He said all of them saw what happened. Police are questioning those witnesses.
'We are not currently actively looking for any outstanding suspects," Sgt. Jay O'Neill of the Glendale Police Department said in an email to media outlets.
At the time, officers were talking to a person described as a "strong investigative lead."
Several hours later, O'Neill confirmed that a 28-year-old Phoenix resident had been taken into custody, but he provided no other information.
"At this point in the investigation we still have witnesses who have yet to be interviewed and are not being detained, so releasing his name would jeopardize the investigation," he said.
Investigators have not determined what sparked the initial fight. It also is not clear how the suspect and the victim were connected.
Police said the 29-year-old victim, despite his wounds, went about 25 yards to another apartment to get help. He later died at a local hospital.
Investigators will not release his name until after they talk to his next of kin.
