1 Dead, 5 injured in crash on I-10 in near downtown PhoenixPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- One person is dead and five others injured after an accident on Interstate 10 near downtown Phoenix.
Phoenix Fire Department officials say the crash occurred late Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Department of Public Safety, Vidal De La Cruz Vega, 21, of Surprise, veered left into the median to avoid stopped traffic. The vehicle rolled over.
"Multiple individuals were ejected from the vehicle," the DPS Duty Office told 3TV.
Gabriel Garcia Jr., 21, of Avondale, was killed. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt.
DPS said De La Cruz Vega was not wearing a seat belt either. He, along with his other passengers, Hernando Garcia, 20; Nancy Torres Padilla, 18; Roberto Mariscal, 18; and Shane Moraine, 20 suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The victims told officers they had spent the day at the Salt River before the wreck.
"Right now our Vehicular Crimes Unit is looking at this as a potential homicide, " DPS Officer Carrick Cook said. "We are going to look into whether impairment was a factor in the crash."
But the HOV and left lanes on I-10 westbound at 16th Street were blocked during rush hour as crews continued cleanup and the investigation of the fatal crash.
All lanes are now open. The last emergency vehicles didn't leave the scene until almost 9:00 p.m.
