GILBERT, Ariz. – A Gilbert man has died following an altercation with police early Saturday morning.

At approximately 3:30 a.m., Gilbert police officers responded to an apartment complex near Guadalupe and McQueen roads after callers reported that a naked man was creating a significant disturbance and yelling for help in the courtyard.

When officers tried to detain the man, he began to fight and assault them, according to Lt. John Lyle. He said it took five officers and several Taser deployments to subdue the man, who has been identified as Daniel Best, 34.

After he was taken into custody, Best started showing signs of significant medical distress, according to Lyle. The Gilbert Fire Department transported him to a local hospital where he died Sunday morning.

Investigators said Best was involved in a fight with his wife in the courtyard prior to the officers' arrival.

"We believe impairment by cocaine is a factor in the behavior encountered by responding officers," Lyle said in a news release.

The Maricopa County medical examiner will conduct an investigation into the cause of death.
