PHOENIX -- Police are searching for a man in connection with an armed robbery at a Phoenix Circle K last month.

About 4:30 a.m. May 24, a man entered the store near 19th Avenue and Osborn Road while armed with a silver revolver, according to police.

He reportedly forced the store manager and clerk, both males, to lie on the ground.

Police said he took the key to the safe from the manager, opened the safe, and struck both employees in the head with the handgun before fleeing with cash.

"What's concerning is that the employees complied. They did everything they were supposed to do and yet the suspect was still extremely violent to the point where he's pistol-whipping the employees," said Sgt. Darren Burch, Silent Witness coordinator.

Burch said one of the employees had a deep laceration that required stitches.

"It's aboslutely a horrific experience for these clerks," he said.

The suspect is described as a 6-foot tall black man between 23 and 27 years old. He has brown eyes and weighs about 170 to 180 pounds.

He was wearing all black clothing including a Raiders cap, long-sleeved button-up shirt and pants. He concealed his face with a black shirt and was wearing black and white Nike shoes.

Police have released surveillance video of the crime along with a video of a "subject of interest," which was recorded at the store before the robbery. The earlier video shows a customer matching the suspect description.

"Many times the suspects will case the store," Burch said. "They'll come in, they'll look at what's going on, see if there's any exmployees, and get a feel for the environment. That may be the case here."
