TEMPE, Ariz. -- Tempe police say an 81-year-old woman involved in a car crash Friday night has died.

Elfriede E. Cockrell, of Tempe, was reportedly driving a Geo Metro east on Southern Avenue about 9:15 p.m. when she failed to stop for a red light at 48th Street. She collided with a Chevrolet Suburban, which was traveling south on 48th Street, according to Tempe Police Sgt. Steve Carbajal.

Initially, her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, and she was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment, Carbajal said. Her condition took a turn and she was pronounced dead at the hospital later that night.

The occupants of the Suburban did not report any injuries.

Police do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash.
