Huge fire erupts in back of N. Phoenix home

PHOENIX -- A house in North Phoenix was damaged by a huge blaze Monday morning.

The fire started at about 8 a.m. at a home near 7th Avenue and Union Hills Drive.

Firefighters said one dog and five cats died in the fire.

The man who lives in the home rescued one dog and firefighters rescued another dog.

"The fire was well involved on our arrival," said Battalion Chief Jim Arbagey of the Phoenix Fire Department. "According to the person that lives here he said he went to take his garbage out front came out back and his patio was on fire."

Arbagey said firefighters could see the fire from the fire station and were on scene in five minutes.
