PHOENIX -- Police say a 78-year-old man who went into medical distress while working inside a Phoenix attic has died.

The man was helping remodel a home near 15th and Maryland avenues Wednesday, Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

The Phoenix Fire Department responded around noon to provide aid and remove the man from the attic.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Ruben Saavedra said firefighters found the man unresponsive.

"We're not really exactly sure what happened to him," Saavedra said. "They're not sure if electricity was involved, heat exhausation or a preexisting medical condition."

He was transported to a local hospital in extremely critical condition and later pronounced dead.

Police have not yet released his name.

The cause of death will be determined by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner.
