PHOENIX -- A plane made an unscheduled landing at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Thursday due to an unruly passenger, according to police.

The American Airlines flight was en route from Los Angeles to Miami when a 21-year-old man began behaving erratically, Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos said.

The flight crew landed the plane at Sky Harbor about 12:30 p.m., and Phoenix police removed the man from the plane.

Based on observations by the flight crew and police officers, the passenger was taken to an area hospital and received medical attention.

Martos said it is unknown if drugs were involved.

Police are not releasing the man's name because he has not been booked into jail, but the information was forwarded to TSA, Martos said.

The plane resumed its flight to Miami.
