Cool off in newly-reopened Cortez poolPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- If you're staying in town this holiday weekend and looking for a way to cool off, we have a suggestion! Cortez Pool is open once again, five years after it was shut down.
The pool has undergone extensive renovations in the half-decade it's been closed. "Cortez closed five years ago. It was a very old pool and basically unusable," says David Urbinato with the City of Phoenix. "It was essentially rebuilt from the ground up."
Renovations cost more than $3 million. The pool area now features three separate pools. The kiddie-pool includes tons of shade for the little ones. There's a separate main pool and slide pool. "They all have their own pumps," says Urbinato. So if there's a problem in one, you can keep the other two going."
Cortez Pool is located at 3434 W. Dunlap Avenue in Phoenix.
The pool will open for the season on May 24 with all the other city pools. A public celebration is planned for June 6. Councilwoman Thelda Williams will preside over the event.
Phoenix city pools open for the 2014 season May 24-27. Pools will then be open for full summer operation from Saturday May 31 through Sunday July 27. During the regular reason, pools are open every day except Fridays from 1 to 7 p.m.
These pools also will be open weekends in August through Labor Day: David C. Uribe, El Prado, Encanto, Falcon, Hermoso, Maryvale, Paradise Valley, Pecos, Perry, Sunnyslope, Washington
