MESA, Ariz. -- A toddler died after being pulled from a Mesa swimming pool Saturday afternoon, according to Mesa Fire and Medical Capt. Craig Chenery.

Dane McDonald, 3, was attending a child's birthday party at a home in the area of Power and McDowell roads, Chenery said.

Some of the children were playing inside the residence while Dane and other kids were playing in the hot tub, which was connected to the pool but not heated, according to police. His mother found him floating in the hot tub.

Sgt. Tony Landato said there were several adults in the backyard, but none of them saw the children who were in the hot tub.

The homeowner and a neighbor who is a retired firefighter attempted CPR but when paramedics arrived, the boy did not have a pulse.

He was transported to Banner Baywood Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

There are conflicting reports about how long he was underwater.

"The first reports were one to two minutes missing and then the mother had stated that the children had been out in the pool or in the spa playing for the last couple hours," Chenery said.

Landato said no criminal charges are anticipated.
