CASA GRANDE, Ariz. -- Casa Grande police seized 279 pounds of marijuana and arrested two alleged smugglers during a traffic stop Friday morning.
The Casa Grande Police Department said officers assigned to an anti-drug smuggling detail were working in the area of Chuichu and Battaglia roads when they saw a red Honda speeding and tried to conduct a traffic stop.
The Honda reportedly continued about 1/2 mile after officers activated their lights and sirens before stopping.
Police said 18-year-old Wesley Morris of Eloy was driving the Honda and 27-year-old Guadalupe Mena-Zayas of Mexico was the passenger.
The officers noticed possible marijuana packages in the backseat and a strong odor of marijuana, police said. The two men were allegedly smuggling $139,500 worth of pot in 12 packages.
The drugs and 1995 Honda were seized by police, and Morris and Mena-Zayas were arrested on suspicion of possession and transportation of marijuana. The charges have been forwarded to the Pinal County Attorney's Office for review.
