TEMPE, Ariz. -- Waterparks are popular here in the Valley, especially when the summer sun scorches the city.

Big Surf Waterpark in Tempe boasts one of the biggest attractions around -- a monster wave pool.

It's the original North American wave pool and the third largest in the country by size/volume.

It holds about 2.5 million gallons of water and kicks out a wave every three minutes.

3TV's Ryan O'Donnell went behind the scenes to see how those waves are generated. It takes quite a bit of heavy machinery to do what Mother Nature accomplishes effortlessly.
