SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Parents of some Shadow Ridge High School students kept their kids home Friday after the school alerted them to a threat that had been made.

Although school officials believe the threat to be a hoax and classes are proceeding as scheduled, they are taking the situation seriously and immediately brought in the Surprise Police department to investigate.

The principal, Michael Hawkins, sent a letter to parents Thursday to let them know about the potential threat.

The threat was found in a bathroom at the school. While the threat was not specific about a person or target, it was specific about Friday.

Surprise investigators said this is an active investigation and that detectives are pursuing some "solid leads."

It is illegal to make a threat against a school, school personnel or students. The offense is a class 1 misdemeanor.

Shadow Ridge is part of Dysart Unified School District No. 89.
