Phoenix weather: Gusty winds, cooler temps arrive for Mother's DayPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A storm system tracking north or Arizona will drag a dry cold front through the state Sunday. This will intensify winds and bring a drop in temperatures.
Saturday afternoon, Phoenix Sky Harbor saw a high of 94 degrees. Winds increased between 10 and 15 mph throughout the day, with gusts near 25 mph.
Headed into Saturday night and into Sunday, winds will increase in speed. In the Valley, expect sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 35 to 40. In the high country, sustained winds will range from 25 to 35 mph with gusts of 40 to 50 mph.
Humidity will be low and fuels are dry, so Red Flag Warnings are in effect for a big chunk of Arizona Sunday, including in the Phoenix-metro area. Wind Advisories are also in effect for portions of northern Arizona.
With the wind, blowing dust in susceptible areas is also a concern. Any dust that kicks up may reduce visibility, especially between Phoenix and Tucson along Interstate 10 and east of Flagstaff along Interstate 40.
Temperatures will plunge back down to the low and mid-80s Sunday afternoon, before transitioning to the upper 80s Monday. Winds are also expected to subside Monday.
Finally, we may see isolated showers, thunderstorms and potentially snow flurries Sunday north of Flagstaff.
