PEORIA, Ariz. -- A Peoria smoke shop owner accused of selling Spice is facing several charges, including the possession and distribution of dangerous drugs.

Peoria police detectives arrested Mike Ghazawneh after serving search warrants at Tobacco Island Smoke Shop near 83rd Avenue and Cactus Road and his nearby home last month.

Detectives believed he was selling Spice to customers despite being aware that it was illegal.

Police spokeswoman Amanda Jacinto said last May officers gave Ghazawneh a synthetic drugs flier explaining the new law making Spice and the chemical compounds found in those drugs illegal. At that time, he said he understood and signed an affidavit stating he would comply.

In January, detectives learned he was still selling Spice from his smoke shop, according to Jacinto.

She said detectives did not locate any Spice during the search of the business, but they found more than 280 vials of the drug at Ghazawneh's home near 88th Avenue and Cactus Road.

During an interview with detectives, Ghazawneh reportedly admitted to selling Spice.
